The New BlackBerry Q5 Smartphone launches in Singapore

Team BlackBerry celebrates 10th Anniversary existence here in Singapore with a new product, BlackBerry Q5 which will be available across all 3 Singapore Telcos, namely Singtel, M1 and StarHub with a retail price of $528. As of now, it will only be available in Black and White colour, although I think Red colour will be more appealing. It will be available for sale 2nd August, 2013.

BlackBerry Q5 is cater for customers who are concern about budget yet want to enjoy a QWERTY keyboard in a stunning, youthful design and makes it easy for users to have fun, create, share and stay connected via social networking and messaging.

It is pre-loaded with BlackBerry 10 OS version 10.1, similar to the existing OS which are available in BlackBerry Z10 and Q10. This means you can also sideload Android Apps. Q5 QWERTY keyboard do remind me of their legacy BlackBerry Curve edition, the island-style keyboard. One thing I do notice, when you press one of the letter, surrounding letters will sink in a little, however that doesn't affect my typing experience and it does feel different as compared to typing with Q10. It is not a matter of which is better feel, but just an issue of preference. In fact, just like what one of the Team BlackBerry representative had told me during the launch event, BlackBerry is probably the only Smartphone manufacturer that still produces a QWERTY keyboard handheld. Building on what they do best!

BlackBerry Q5, similar with Q10, comes with 720 x 720 resolutions, 3.1 inch, IPS LCD display which will display consistent and accurate colour from all viewing angles. Unlike the other LCDs, it do not lighten or show tailing when touched. As such it offer clear images and stable response time. Q5 offer a slightly bigger battery capacity, 2180 mAh, non-removable. 5 MP rear facing camera, Auto Focus, 5x digital zoom, 1080p HD video recording. 2MP front facing camera, 3x digital zoom, 720p HD video recording.

Usual stuff like Wireless 802.11 b/g/n, Mobile Hotspot. 4G LTE available. Hot Swappable microSD slot, support up to 64 GB. 8 GB Internal Storage. 2 GB RAM. Dual Core 1.2 GHz Processor.

BlackBerry Q5 Now Available in Singapore (Black & White only)

BlackBerry Q5 is now available across all 3 telcos in Singapore, namely Singtel, M1 and Starhub... so far I only manage to get the pricing from Singtel Online Shop:

For those of you are who are willing to buy it without contract, the cheapest so far I found is$450.

Review on Logitech UE 9000

Tired of your ear phone cables getting entangled?

You travel on a public transport or walking a distance and you want to look cool without cables messing your listening pleasure when you need to take stuff from your backpack?

You go gym and you want to have the ease of use for listening intense music without wires running round your body, therefore disrupting your workout. You want to eliminate the cable noise when running on thread mills or using elliptical trainer or cross-trainer?

Portable Bluetooth headphone is the way to go!

Fortunately, I have the privilege to use Logitech UE9000 which not only help me get rid of the wires snaking around me or taking sometime off just to get the wires untangled.  It offer high quality of sound production especially when comes to bass and yet not losing the clarity as some headphones I had tried, usually sound muffled. Not this baby, UE9000!

I am one sucker for movie soundtracks and EDM (Electronic Dance Music) or specifically Progressive Uplifting Trance music. UE 9000 provides me eargasm I experience each time I cover my ears with such headphone! I pay a lot of attention when comes to bass, even my car is installed with a Sub-Woofer which tells you alot about me. Yet, bass without loosing the clarity or the acoustic is what UE9000 had given me. After testing a few ear phones and headphones including Beats, even my colleague who is a female sound crew praise this headphone!

"I like it because it is Bluetooth but it is a little heavy and seems to design more for guys. The bass alone sound is good 'cause it is strong and clear, not muffled. Probably the high (treble) can be improved" - Alicia Leo

It is designed with a noise-isolating, cutting off distractions which allows you to truly enjoy the sound of music!

I do not need to change batteries like how I need to do for other amplified headphones.Supposedly, it is able to last for like 10 hours and I just need to connect to any micro-USB cable to any wall outlets or your laptop to charge.

It has the ability to mute the headphone sound and enhance the external sound to my headphone if someone wants to speak to me. Needless to say, it has internal microphones for hands-free phone calls too.

In terms of design, like what my colleague said, it is heavy but yet the built is geared towards appealing guys and even DJs as you can rotate the joints sideways and it is flexi-fit, adjusting to the size of your head easily. Simply like their soft plush memory foam cushions which doesn't get hot round my ears too easily which most headphone I tried do get hot after like 10 mins of using it. This one make you feel comfortable to put on if you listen to it for hours especially when you watch movie with it.

Inside the box, you will find cable with on-cord mic and controls, just like what the headphone itself offers. USB charging cable and AC Adapter. It also comes with 1/4 inch adapter jack as well. Carrying case that contains all these stuffs.

The only set back will be the pricing (RP S$599) but however, you won't be disappointed with the quality of sound it gives you! With 2 years warranty, it should provide certain sense of security.

Review on Logitech UE Boombox & UE Mobile Boombox

Boombox? That is exactly what Logitech is trying to recall the experience but in a much richer audio experience and perhaps even lighter. When I first tested it in the office, many of my colleagues were simply amazed by the loudness and its sound quality it produce, not compromising on bass without subwoofer and utilizing Bluetooth Technology to bring your favorite EDM (Electronics Dance Music) enjoyable on this baby! Good for me when I use it when I was in the private gym or outdoor BBQ with friends!

I like the fact on one side, their volume control "+" and "-" cannot missed and easy to press. The handle are easy to carry and imitate just like the old school boombox, walking with it looking cool! Even if you plan to use it like your Desktop speaker, it offer a power adapter to keep it charge without any messy audio cable  to tidy up. The ease of use connecting it with my laptop, mobile phones and iPad are so convenient once you paired it.

Let's get technical!
This baby is build with 2 x 0.5" Tweeters, 2 x 3" Woofers and 4 x 5/8" Passive Radiators. Able to pair up to 8 Bluetooth enabled devices and connect up to 3 devices at the same time. Mobile range of play up to 15 meters.

Even his younger brother, Logitech UE Mobile Boombox which is much smaller and portable is able to deliver the loudness, at least for a small room, use for audio conferencing or like me, I use it when I shower in the toilet.

You can use microUSB cable to charge this bluetooth speaker and it has up to 10 hours of battery life. Just like his big brother, it is able to pair up to 8 Bluetooth enabled device but can only connect up to 2 devices at the same time. Mobile range is 15 meters too! If somehow you want to connect this speaker to iPod, you can connect it via 3.5mm audio output.

HTC One Max : Boom(sound) to the Max!

by +Gene C

The HTC One is arguably of one the most speculated and some would say, anticipated mobile devices this quarter as it marks the Taiwanese firms’ first foray into the phablet market with the 5.9” screened device with commenters viewing it as a competitor to the likes of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, and Sony’s Xperia Z Ultra, among others.

The One Max bears many similarities to its smaller sibling, the HTC One, touting an impressive array of features which include BoomSound, the Ultrapixel camera, full unibody aluminum casing, HTC Zoe + video highlights, an IR blaster and Blinkfeed. The standout features besides the 5.9” 1080p SuperLCD3 screen are of course the fingerprint scanner on the back of the device, a 3300mAh non-removable Lithium Polymer battery and microSD card slot (accessed by removing the aluminium back). The three pogo pins on the back of the device are meant to be used by accessories like the Power Flip case for the One Max (more on that later). Another change in layout from the One is the Max's power button has been shifted to the right side of the device under the volume rocker, while the left side contains the release switch for the removable rear cover to allow access to the micro sim tray & microSD card slot.

Astute observers will note that the Beats Audio branding is conspicuously absent from the One Max’s photos, and it is indeed not a feature on this device. Though it is my understanding that despite recent corporate re-alignments aside, HTC’s partnership with Beats Audio remains for the foreseeable future and it will continue to be offered on selected HTC devices in time to come. Some early feedback seems to suggest that the larger speakers on this device actually produces better sound amplitude due to the physically larger speakers.  Also absent is the Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) on the ultrapixel camera, which for unknown reasons (to keep costs down, perhaps?) was excluded on the Max.

While the One Max will come in 16 Gb & 32 Gb variants, the international markets will get the 16Gb version. Though the One Max sports a similar S600 1.7Ghz quad core processor and 2 Gb RAM like on the One, which on paper seems inferior to competing products, the One Max offers the same smooth, lag-free experience as the One does on Sense 5. It could also be said that with the update to Android 4.3, the superior software optimization means that the One Max is able to run as good (if not better) than the competition as it does not need the S800 processor or additional RAM.

In fact, the paring of the S600 and the battery, according to an internal tester (who shall remain unnamed), does produce a very respectable battery life as the large battery in the One Max really seems to live up to its “Max” moniker in that under regular usage with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS on during the day, it had lasted nearly 55 hours in between charges, and this was while it wasn't running on power saver mode either. Rather impressive stats and what makes things even more interesting is the One Max’s power flip case (on the right) which has an in-built 1210mAh battery which is used to charge the One Max without adding much heft to the 10.29mm thick device.

The fingerprint scanner, which would be the most obvious addition to the Max, is used not only to unlock the device, but also to fire up apps, where a user can program the swiping (Up or down) of 2-3 different fingers to launch up to 3 different apps.

NFC,  Bluetooth 4.0, Wifi N, LTE support as well as the usual array of sensors come as standard as expected from a device belonging to the One family. DLNA support is also present as is MHL via the micro USB port connector.

Sense 5.5

The One Max will be the first HTC device to ship with the latest update to Sense, Sense 5.5, straight out of the box, running on Android 4.3.  While it is supposed to be more efficient running on the lastest version of Android, it also brings some new features to the One Max, namely:

Dual capture mode in the camera app – a Picture in picture mode which utilizes both rear and front facing cameras in one shot for the traveler who need to take scenic selfies.

Blinkfeed -  Allows for Google+ feed & composing, RSS feed support, a ‘Read later’ mode and a menu interface that appears when you swipe right on blinkfeed. There is also the option to turn off blinkfeed entirely from permanently occupying a panel.

HTC Scribble – seems to be an added functionality for making notes, lists, making cards, sharing photos and so on, with a number of customisable templates included which can be saved to Google Drive or saves a image files.

Video highlights – Users will get to choose to add audio files on their devices as the soundtrack and tweak the length of highlight clips with 12 themes to choose from.

These are just some of the improvements coming with Sense 5.5 in addition to greater customization of the quick settings pull-down grid.

Summary

In short, The HTC One Max is in some ways, a much larger HTC One, while maintaining the pedigree of its predecessor, also tries to differentiate itself with features like the fingerprint scanner, larger screen and functionality,  while stretching to become HTC’s hopeful answer to the likes of the Galaxy Note 3, and Xperia Ultra. Only time will tell, if the One Max will go on to build on the success story of the One & One mini that came before it.

Open Letter from BlackBerry

"You can continue to count on BlackBerry..."

To our valued customers, partners and fans,

You’ve no doubt seen the headlines about BlackBerry. You’re probably wondering what they mean for you as one of the tens of millions of users who count on BlackBerry every single day.

We have one important message for you:

You can continue to count on BlackBerry.

How do we know? We have substantial cash on hand and a balance sheet that is debt free.

We are restructuring with a goal to cut our expenses by 50 percent in order to run a very efficient, customer-oriented organization.

These are no doubt challenging times for us and we don’t underestimate the situation or ignore the challenges. We are making the difficult changes necessary to strengthen BlackBerry.

One thing we will never change is our commitment to those of you who helped build BlackBerry into the most trusted tool for the world’s business professional.

And speaking of those dramatic headlines, it’s important that we set the record straight on a few things.

Best in class productivity tool.

We have completely revamped our device portfolio this year with the launch of BlackBerry 10. We have four BlackBerry 10 devices – two all touch and two hybrid (touch and QWERTY) – and all are running the third update of our new platform. If what you care about most is getting things done – taking care of your business – we have the best range of devices for you. And we continue to offer the best mobile typing experience – no ifs, ands or buts about it.

Best in class security.

Governments all over the world, global corporations and businesses that simply cannot compromise on security choose and trust BlackBerry. Security is our heritage, and the industry recognizes that BlackBerry is the most secure when it comes to the device, server and, of course, our global data network. Have no doubt that you can continue to trust us to keep your communication safe and private.

Best in class enterprise mobility management.

We changed with the market, embracing BYOD because we understand that as iOS and Android devices become common in the workplace, businesses still need to manage all of these different platforms seamlessly and securely.

This is not a trivial task. While there are a number of startup companies that make bold claims, BlackBerry has more software engineers and the most resources dedicated to developing the most innovative solutions to address this complex challenge.

And our customers know it. Over the past quarter, our BlackBerry® Enterprise Service 10 server base grew from 19,000 to more than 25,000. Corporate clients are committed to deploying and testing the latest enterprise technology from BlackBerry. We are committed to evolving with our customers. That will never change.

Best in class mobile social network.

We are bringing the most engaging mobile messaging platform to all, with our BBM launch for Android and iPhone.

There are already around six million customers pre-registered to be notified of our roll out. This number is growing every day, and speaks to the tremendous opportunity we have to expand BBM beyond BlackBerry smartphones to make it the world’s largest mobile social network.

Yes, there is a lot of competition out there and we know that BlackBerry is not for everyone. That’s OK. You have always known that BlackBerry is different, that BlackBerry can set you apart. Countless world-changing decisions have been finalized, deals closed and critical communications made via BlackBerry. And for many of you that created a bond, a connection that goes back more than a decade.

We believe in BlackBerry – our people, our technology and our ability to adapt. More importantly, we believe in you. We focus every day on what it takes to make sure that you can take care of business.

You trust your BlackBerry to deliver your most important messages, so trust us when we deliver one of our own: You can continue to count on us.

Sincerely,

The BlackBerry Team

BlackBerry 10.2 features I am excited about..

There are already extensive features mentioned in  CrackBerry which you can also refer to it but I will only cover what matters to me as a nominal BlackBerry user.

LOCKED SCREEN NOTIFICATION
Preview on your locked screen like your reminders, social media feeds, emails or latest BBM chat.

PRIORITY HUB
Setting up the section to see what really matters to you. Configure whose contacts or conversation you want them to appear in this Priority Hub. There are available settings already in place to automatically shift them here but you can customize who or who not to appear.

ATTACHMENT VIEW
When you are in the BlackBerry Hub, you will notice there is Attachment view, this is the place where you can see all the attachments you received for all your email accounts, you can filter it by sorting it by sender, date, file name or type. There is also a quick search function you can use to narrow down exactly the name of the file.

ADAPTIVE SHARING MENU
Sharing your picture has never been easier when using BlackBerry with its ability to learn who or what app you usually use to share your picture, providing a shortcut right above the menu of apps you want to share to.

INSTANT PREVIEW AND REPLY
While you are doing your thing or surfing, new BBM message will drop down and you can tab the icon next to close to reply instantly without exiting your current app.

NEW COPY AND PASTE MENU
To me, this is the most important feature and massive improvement done for BlackBerry 10 OS. It is easier right now to copy and paste your texts from browser or emails. You can also opt to share it with any available app in the menu as well. To begin, you can just tap and hold it there for 1 seconds and you can drag the blue indicators left and right of the word to select your desired texts. The copy, paste and share menu will automatically pop up.

MULTIPLE ALARMS
I for one don't really need multiple alarms but perhaps some of you guys might need it just in case you hit dismiss. I never know when I will ever use it but still it is a bonus feature.

You can simply tap at the top right hand corner as shown below to add another alarm.
